Reggie Johnson Makes SI's Breakout List

Sophomore center Reggie Johnson has been named as one of five breakout sophomores to watch by Sports Illustrated's Luke Winn.

Winn has tested out a statistical method of identifying breakout sophomores based on a Basketball Prospectus study of players' possession usage over their first three seasons.

Nebraska forward Christian Standhardinger, Texas forward Jordan Hamilton, Villanova guard Maalik Wayns and UCLA forward Reeves Nelson also made Winn's list.

Zampogna, Gonzalez, Marley on allCanes Radio Tonight

Former 'Canes Rohan Marley, Joaquin Gonzalez and Francesco Zampogna will join Brian "The Beast" London on allCanes Radio, live from Smoke't Southern Kitchen and Tap in Coral Gables tonight at 7pm.

Marley played at Miami from 1992-94 and played for Ottawa of the CFL in 1995. He is the son of the late reggae legend Bob Marley.

Gonzalez starred at Miami from 1997-2001 and spent four years in the NFL with the Browns and Colts.

Zampogna was the 'Canes primary kicker during the 2007 season. Showing the form of Garo Yepremian but the results of Dan Marino, his touchdown pass on a fake field goal (above) helped lift the 'Canes past the Seminoles in Tallahassee that year.

Manny Navarro of the Miami Herald will also appear.

Cleveland Rocks Saturday's Practice

Asante Cleveland, a 6'5," 255 pound freshman tight end from Sacramento, California, was the newcomer to watch during Saturday's practice in front of 3000 'Canes fans.

Cleveland sure caught Coach Shannon's eye; he had this to say while meeting with reporters after practice: “I’m very excited about Asante Cleveland’s performance today. The big catch he had with three people around him was unbelievable.”

Rolle Media Guide Gaffe Not FSU SID's Worst Error

After reading "Cane Mutiny" author Bruce Feldman's retweet from Heath Cline about the 2010 FSU media guide featuring Rhodes Scholar Myron Rolle on its academics page and misspelling his name "Myrone," I was reminded this gaffe wasn't the most egregious one in 'Noles Sports Information history.

Back in the fall of 1982, Florida State printed 10,000 copies of its 125th Anniversary special edition football program before someone noticed one of the fans on the cover was none other than Miami Hurricanes baseball coach Ron Fraser. Fraser, fresh off the 'Canes first College World Series title, was photographed as part of a crowd shot with his daughter Lynda, who attended FSU at the time. While Fraser is a FSU alum, his claim to fame being "The Wizard of College Baseball" was due to his success of leading the rival Miami baseball program to national prominence.

Needless to say, the program was pulled after the discovery.

Neither case compares to the Florida Gators putting a photo of a crocodile on the cover of their 2003 media guide. Only in "Floriduh!"

A Pirate in the Midst

Yesterday, I signed into Facebook and was surprised to see a friend had been tagged in a photo of a photo - specifically, “The U Pro Bowl” photo we posted on our blog back in February shot by my assistant, Eric Espada.

The photo had been enlarged to what looks like a 16x20 print and professionally matted and framed. The text below the photo stated prints were available for $25 and framed for $85.

We have never authorized this image for reproduction, other than to UM for inclusion in their website and media guide. Only a couple of prints were made for close friends, and not at this size and ratio.

A little investigation revealed the offender’s name, high school, college and employer. Further talks with people involved with UM and the autograph business revealed he was a former ball boy for the Hurricanes. So how did he get the image? We believe he got it from someone inside UM, and this wouldn’t be the first time this has occurred. Because it was likely carried out by someone inside the Canes family it is all the more insulting and offensive. It’s also not the first time a graduate of Cooper City High School pirated our work.

Even though UM helped arrange this shot, in the end, the copyright lies with the photographer, Eric Espada.

I have fought the piracy of our photos for years. I have seen our photos many times on eBay. The pirates have copied our images from magazines and have even somehow acquired original files from an insider at the athletic department. I once caught a former Hurricanes baseball player doing it. I also caught someone doing it who, after being suspended by eBay for these acts, implied a threat of bodily harm against me for protecting my own work. That person now works for an nationally-known autograph and trading card authentication service!

I have also seen our images pirated at memorabilia shows. In most cases, when called out, the dealer/seller usually claims "I bought them at a card show" and when pressed for more information they "can't remember" where they got them.

Now it appears the new excuse is “I got it from Getty.” It was the first excuse our pirate from the University of Central Florida used in his defense of the Pro Bowl photo.

Many pirates buy and share passwords to Getty and other wire services and steal all the files they want. The company, which has almost single-handedly destroyed the sports stock and editorial market, appears indifferent to piracy of their photographers' work.

My contention concerning pirated works on eBay and at memorabilia shows is, "If the photo is pirated, then why would you trust that the seller acquired the genuine autograph?"

So how can we tell the image is ours? Sometimes the images just stick out because the other crap being offered on eBay and other venues is horrible. I always cross-check those images I believe are our property with our archive, looking for minute matching details in the images.

You may have also noticed we only offer 8x12’s instead of 8x10’s of most images from the “revenue sports” at UM. The reason is twofold: The images come out of our cameras at a 2:3 ratio (8x12) and also because a familiar image, made into an 8x10, on an auction site immediately catches our attention. We do supply 8x10's to Allcanes for their annual player signings.

In another example, I had a shot from the 2002 Miami @ WVU game of Willis McGahee running between two defenders. Even though the print was originally sold as an 8x10, I have only sold the print as a limited print signed and numbered by Willis. The print offered on eBay was apparently unsigned, telling me it was a pirated work.

“People will pay if you make it easy, convenient, and a good value. Marketing 101.”

That model has worked for Apple and their iTunes music store. Apple cut through the nonsense and figured out a way to reach a middle ground between piracy and compensation. Customers have downloaded billions of songs in response.

The difference between the music and photography industries is most music pirates are grabbing files for personal use and not trying to resell the material to the general public. In our case, the pirates are making an often-inferior product and selling to the unsuspecting public for profit.

Instead of spending time and energy on a guilt message, we are trying something more focused on becoming a partner with the customer. So last year we started offering digital downloads for $2.99 with the freedom to use those images for your personal use, such as on blogs and social media pages. We also post compelling images on our blog and Facebook page, which you can use personally in electronic form as long as you don’t remove our credit line at the bottom or the IPTC data. We are also dropping the price of an 8x12 photo to $14.99 this fall. We hope these actions are a “middle ground” for most of you.

One thing we will not knowingly condone is the blatant piracy of our images, especially from a Scoop Orlando bartender who is trying to profit off our hard work, sweat and expertise.

On To Football Season We Go

After UM Baseball's disaster in Ganesville I thought the summer doldrums would commence with the image of error after error burned in my brain until football season. Fortunately for me the marketing department wanted to do their football shoot this week, and now I'm in full football mode.

So early this morning I made my way to ~~Joe Robbie Stadium~~ ~~Pro Player Stadium~~ ~~Dolphin Stadium~~ ~~Landshark Stadium~~ Sun Life Stadium to shoot Jacory Harris, Brandon Harris, Allen Bailey, Matt Bosher, Orlando Franklin, Colin McCarthy and Leonard Hankerson for the 2010 Hurricanes poster. We set up in the 'Canes locker room and did the group shot then had fun with some individual set ups.

While I'll wait for the poster release before I show the groups I'll give you a peek at the individuals, like Jacory's shot above, every so often in the coming days on the Caneshooter.com Facebook fan page.

'Canes Fall to Texas A&M, Elimination Game Tonight

Whaley's Strong Outing Leads 'Canes to Regional Opener Victory

Freshman righthander Eric Whaley, filling in for the injured Eric Erickson, pitched four shutout innings to lead the 'Canes to a 12-8 victory over the Dartmouth Big Green yesterday in the Coral Gables Regional. Whaley gave up two hits struck out four in his 44 pitch performance.

The 'Canes led 11-0 before a lightning delay of 68 minutes sapped their momentum and fundamentals, with poor relief pitching and fielding miscues allowing the Big Green back into the game.

"We played well the first five or six innings and after the lightning delay, it was another team on the field." UM coach Jim Morris said. "We thought the game was over with, which it obviously wasn't."

Miami takes on Texas A&M today at 4pm at ARod Park and on ESPNU.

The Dog Days of Summer

If you're wondering about the recent lack of posts, well, it seems the dog days of summer are upon us. Our ambition at the start of this blog was to promote our website with a photo each and every day but as we reach the "offseason" (coaches always deny there is an offseason) it becomes harder and harder to keep up with relevant posts and images.

You may have noticed we recently changed the name of the blog from "The Daily Caneshooter" to "Miami Hurricanes Photo Blog." This reflects the change from our original ambition to something more realistic. As always, you can get your 'Canes photo fix by visiting caneshooter.com, where we now have over 32,000 photos uploaded.

So what will we post during the "offseason?" Well, we are in the middle of an ambitious scanning project which should take most of the summer. From JC's start at UM in the early 1990's, progressing from student to Team Photographer, to about 2001, slides and negatives were the method of imagemaking. Re-editing and scanning the thousands of images is a time-consuming task, and as we progress through the archive we'll post some "archive finds" on the blog.

Our first example is a shot of former 'Canes RB Dyral McMillan fighting off the attempted tackle by Arizona State DB Pat Tillman (yes, THAT Pat Tillman) during a game in 1997.

Hernandez Named ACC Pitcher of the Week

Hurricanes junior Chris Hernandez was named ACC pitcher of the week yesterday.

Hernandez is 7-2 on the season after a career-high 13 strikeout performance last Friday against Barry.

Hernandez is tied for second in the ACC in wins with seven, is fifth in ERA (3.04) and sixth in strikeouts (76). The award is his second of the 2010 season.

Santos Among Group of 7 UM HOF Inductees Tonight

The University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame will induct its 2010 class tonight at a ceremony and dinner tonight at Jungle Island. Among the inductees are Alex Santos (baseball), Bubba Franks (football), Jim Cox (football), Ed Morris (basketball) Jenny Keim Johansen (diving), Sid Schwartz (tennis) and associate Athletic Director Connie Nickel. Jason Michaels (baseball) was inducted earlier this year, as he is currently with the Houston Astros.

Martinez Leads 'Canes Over UNC

Harold Martinez' three-run homer in the 5th inning highlighted the 13th ranked Hurricanes' 11-1 win over #21 North Carolina at Alex Rodriguez Park last night. The win guarantees the Hurricanes their first series win against the Tar Heels since 2005 and their fifth ACC series win in their first six this season.

The homer was Martinez'11th this season and his fifth in Miami's last 10 games.

Micanor Regis Excels on Another Field

Relays and sprints aren't the only segments of track & field in which Hurricanes football players excel. Defensive lineman Micanor Regis was the leading collegian with a throw of 14.40 meters during last week's Hurricane Alumni Invitational.

In today's shot put competition at the 2010 ACC Track & Field Championships in Clemson, South Carolina, Regis improved his personal best to 14.54 meters.

'Canes 4x100 Relay Team Shines at Hurricanes Alumni Invitational

The 'Canes football program has a long, rich tradition of players who excelled in track, and yesterday's 4x100 relay team was no exception. Cory Nelms, DeMarcus VanDyke, Travis Benjamin and Brandon McGee finished first in the event with a time of 40.15 seconds, the fastest by a Miami relay team since the 1998 season and is the third fastest time in school history.

Why the 'Canes WNIT Run Matters

The Hurricanes disdain runner-up trophies.

At least that's how the story goes over the years. A College World Series runner-up trophy held a door open for Jim Morris' interview at UM before being hired back in 1994. A Fiesta Bowl runner-up trophy held a door open in the SID office back in 2003.

Don't tell it to Charmaine Clark, who was holding the WNIT runner-up trophy like a teddy bear while touring San Francisco after Saturday's 73-61 loss to the University of California in the WNIT Championship Game.

Even the 1991-92 team, the greatest team in Miami Women's Basketball history, who bookended the season with losses around 30 straight wins, didn't win five straight in the postseason.

The 'Canes made their run after losing 6 of 7 games at the end of the season, including a "one and done" appearance at the ACC Conference Tournament. This team could have called it a season in the WNIT opener against Florida Gulf Coast, a team with a 24-7 record. Instead they took down the Eagles, then the Gators, Aggies, Friars, and Wolverines.

By the time they arrived in Berekely, they were gassed, having spent time in Chicago awaiting their final destination, then having to travel west and play in about 24 hours time. They shot 13% (2 of 15) from the floor to open the game.

The Hurricanes return with all but two players from this year's team, and with the experience of having played in do or die games and championship pressure and disappointment. This runner-up trophy is a stepping stone instead of a door-stop.

Jameson's Big Day at Hurricane Invitational

Tameka Jameson highlighted the Hurricanes outdoor track season opener at the Hurricane Invitational, held last Saturday at Cobb Stadium.

Jameson won the 200m dash in a personal best time of 23.98 seconds, then she also reached another personal best in the 400m dash, winning the event in 53.84 seconds.

'Canes Beat Gators 77-64, Advance to WNIT 3rd Round

Hurricanes sophomore Shenise Johnson led all scorers with 19 points as the Hurricanes defeated the Florida Gators 77-64 in a WNIT second round game yesterday. Johnson also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season, and added eight assists.

The Hurricanes move on to the WNIT third round on Thursday night at 7pm when they host North Carolina A&T at the BankUnited Center.

'Canes Host Women's NIT Opener Tonight

Durand Scott Named to ACC All-Tournament Team

Hurricanes freshman guard Durand Scott was named to the first team ACC All-Tournament for his performance in leading UM to the semi-final round in Greensboro this past week.

Scott is the first Miami player to earn first team ACC All-Tournament honors. Scott averaged a team high 14.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.0 steals in three games.

Four 'Canes Nominated For CWS Legends Team

Hurricanes baseball head coach Jim Morris and former Hurricanes Pat Burrell, Danny Matienzo and Alex Cora have been nominated for potential selection to the College World Series Legends Team, as announced by the NCAA on Thursday.

To commemorate the final Series being played in Omaha’s Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium during the 2010 Men’s College World Series, the NCAA is asking baseball fans to help select the College World Series Legends Team.

The Legends Team will represent those student-athletes who had the best CWS performances throughout the 60 years the event has been played at Rosenblatt Stadium.

The team will consist of 27 members: two former student-athletes per fielding position, four pitchers, two designated hitters, three head coaches and two “utility players”. The utility players will be determined after fan voting has completed, and will represent those student-athletes deserving recognition who may not have been selected by fans, media and coaches at a particular position.

Voting for the CWS Legends Team begins Thursday, March 11, and will run until Noon on Friday, April 16.

Durand Scott Named to ACC All-Rookie Team

Hurricanes freshman guard Durand Scott has been named to the Atlantic Coast Conference All-Rookie Team as voted on by 53 members of the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association.

Miami's first-ever All-Rookie Team pick, Scott was a UM-best four-time ACC Rookie of the Week selection and the league's leading freshman in assists with a team-high tying 3.5 per game.

Miami owns a 122-95-1 advantage all-time over Florida. Last season, the 'Canes and Gators met five times in Gainesville - with UM sweeping an early season three-game series before the Gators won both match-ups in the Gainesville Regional in late May. The last time the two teams met in Coral Gables, the 'Canes won two of three games in 2008.

Antoine Allen Named to All-ACC Academic Team

Hurricanes freshman guard Antoine Allen was named to the 2010 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Men's Basketball Team yesterday.

Allen is the eighth Hurricane to earn All-ACC Academic Team recognition since 2006, second only to Duke, with nine, during the same period.

Allen was among a group of 12 to earn the recognition this season, which requires a student athlete to earn a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and maintain a 3.0 cumulative average during his academic career.

Williams & Johnson Named to All-ACC Team

The Hurricanes' sophomore tandem of Shenise Johnson and Riquna Williams have been named to All-ACC Women's Basketball Teams.

Johnson, named to the first team, scored 18.6 points per game and led the `Canes with 7.6 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 3.1 steals per game.

Williams, named to the second team, was the ACC's second leading scorer this season with 19.5 points per game and set a new school single season record for three pointers with 83.

Jason Michaels Inducted Into UM Sports Hall of Fame

Former Hurricanes and current Houston Astros outfielder Jason Michaels was inducted into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame last night prior to the season opener against Rutgers.

Michaels, who played at UM from 1997-98, hit .396 (3rd highest in school history) with 34 home runs and 154 RBI in his Hurricanes career. In 1997, he set Hurricane single-season records for hits (106), doubles (32) and total bases (189). The Cardinals selected him in the 15th round of the 1997 MLB amateur draft, but Michaels returned to Miami for his senior season.

In June 1998, Michaels was selected for the fourth time in the baseball amateur draft, this time by the Phillies in the 4th round. Entering his 10th season in the majors, Michaels has played for the Phillies, Indians, Pirates and Astros.

McClinton and former Hurricane great and NBA Hall of Famer Rick Barry will be on hand for the celebration, while the late Hickox will be represented by his wife, Sylvia. A bout of the flu has prevented Curnutt from traveling for the festivities.

McClinton will also be raising money for the relief effort in Haiti by selling two commemorative T-shirts which can be purchased around campus and outside the stadium tonight for $10. Jack will be on hand to sign autographs for all those who purchase a shirt.

The photo of UM alum Molly Jones flashing "The U" in a photo with Tim Tebow has been making the rounds on the internet at lightning speed and the biggest question is "how did she pull this off?" Because Molly is a good friend, we were able to get the inside story of how the photo happened.

Molly told us "I mustered up the courage to walk up to him. He was a very nice guy and a great sport about agreeing to snap a photo. My brother counted to 3. '1…. 2….' I threw up the U. BOOM! Tebow turned to me and said, 'Did you just throw up the U?' I smiled and nodded. He said, 'Aw, c’mon,' but was VERY nice about it. He really should have made me delete it."

As for why she took the chance at pulling off such a ballsy move with the former Gators' star QB, Molly said "I love my alma mater way more than a person should."

Dews' Buzzer Beater Downs Georgia Tech

James Dews, avenging a missed front end of a one-and-one just seconds earlier, hit a jumper at the buzzer to lift the Hurricanes over Georgia Tech 64-62, last night at the BankUnited Center.

Dwayne Collins led the Hurricanes with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Adrian Thomas scored 12, all on 3-pointers, and Malcolm Grant scored 11. Reggie Johnson came off the bench to score 10 points and tally seven rebounds in 16 minutes.

The Hurricanes (17-7, 3-7 ACC) won for only the second time in the past eight games, and improved to 11-1 at home this season.

'Canes Golfers Host Hurricane Invitational

The University of Miami Women's Golf team will host its first tournament of the spring season with the Hurricane Invitational this Sunday, Monday and Tuesday at Don Shula's Golf Resort in Miami Lakes.

A total of 18 teams are slated to compete. Central Florida, Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, Eastern Michigan, East Tennessee State, Georgia State, Illinois State, James Madison, Kentucky, Memphis, Mercer, North Carolina State, Oklahoma City, San Diego State, South Florida, Southern Mississippi and Texas State will join Miami in the three day tournament.

Competition will begin on Sunday with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m., followed by a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start on Monday and an 8 a.m. start on Tuesday.

'Canes Help Saints to Super Bowl Victory

Former Hurricanes greats Jonathan Vilma and Jeremy Shockey became the 14th and 15th 'Canes to earn both Super Bowl rings AND National Championship rings as the New Orleans Saints defeated the Indianapolis Colts 31-17 last night in Super Bowl XLIV.

Shockey also became the 9th former 'Cane to score a touchdown in a Super Bowl with his 4th quarter TD catch. The 'Canes lead all schools with nine Super Bowl TD's. Notre Dame is second with six. Alabama, Auburn and Texas? Nada, zero, zilch, none.

Shenise Johnson scored 25 points and collected 10 rebounds as Miami snapped a three game losing streak with an 80-69 victory over the #9 North Carolina Tar Heels last night at the BankUnited Center. Johnson also had six assists and tied a career high with eight steals.

Miami won its second game of the season over a ranked team. The Hurricanes defeated then #13 Florida State on January 10th. Miami also ended Maryland's 48 game home winning streak on January 21st.

'Canes Sign 28

National Signing Day

Today is National Signing Day, or National Letter of Intent day. Now held on the first Wednesday each February, it is the first day a high school senior can sign a binding National Letter of Intent for college sports.

I've covered fifteen of these days for Canesport, and I've seen at all. I've seen a kid sign with two schools and a kid walk away from the table and not sign with anyone. There are kids who made up their mind long before this day (like Davon Johnson, above) and kids who play to the media with dramatics better suited for acting school.

Today, I'm scheduled to attend David Perry's signing at University School in Davie, Johnathan Feliciano's signing at Western High School in Davie, and Jermaine Barton, Keion Payne and Brandon Linder's signing at St. Thomas High School in Ft. Lauderdale.

Hopefully, I'll avoid the reality show that was Kayvon Webster's signing at Pace Monsignor High School last year.

The NFL Pro Bowl kicks off at 7pm tonight at Sun Life Stadium in Miami, and the Hurricanes will have a record eleven players on the roster.

By way of comparison, the Florida Gators have only had 18 players in the Pro Bowl all-time.

WR Andre Johnson (Houston Texans), WR Reggie Wayne (Indianapolis Colts), DL Vince Wilfork (New England Patriots), LB Ray Lewis (Baltimore Ravens), S Ed Reed (Baltimore Ravens), S Brandon Meriweather (New England Patriots), OL Bryant McKinnie (Minnesota Vikings), LB Jonathan Vilma (New Orleans Saints), RB Frank Gore (San Francisco 49ers), S Antrel Rolle (Arizona Cardinals) and LB Jon Beason (Carolina Panthers) will represent "The U" on the Pro Bowl roster.

McKinnie was kicked off the squad due to too many missed practices. Reed will not play due to injury. Wayne and Vilma will not play as they are in next week's Super Bowl.

"The U has turned out some great players," Rolle said. "We're amongst the best of the best in the league and it shows out there each and every Sunday."

Every recruit should take notice of this roster, or the poster the marketing department issued a few years ago or the cereal box from last year and learn that success in the NFL often flows through Coral Gables.

Miami Hurricanes Baseball earned its second Top 20 ranking of the 2010 preseason on Wednesday, as Baseball America ranks the 'Canes #16 in their preseason poll.

The 'Canes will be led by preseason All-America catcher Yasmani Grandal. Grandal emerged last season as one of the top power hitters in the ACC, leading Miami and all ACC catchers with 16 home runs. The Miami native led the 'Canes with a 1.081 OPS in 2009 en route to earning All-ACC second team honors. He finished his sophomore season ranking second on the team in slugging percentage (.599) and total bases (118), while collecting 45 RBI and 48 runs scored in 59 games.

In his two seasons in Coral Gables, Grandal has 23 home runs, 73 RBI and a .978 fielding percentage in 97 career games. After hitting .234 as a freshman in 2008, he improved his average by 65 points last year to .299. Over the summer, Grandal was a key member of Team USA during its championship run at the 2009 World Baseball Challenge.

Miami blew a 17 point lead as the Eagles trailed 58-41 before a 22-7 run got them back in the game. The Hurricanes shot just 10 of 29 from the floor in the second half.

Former Hurricanes midfielder Beverly Goebel was a third-round (27th overall) selection by the Washington Freedom in the 2010 Women's Professional Soccer Draft last Friday.

Former Hurricanes RB Jarrett Payton has signed to play with the Chicago Slaughter of the Indoor Football League.

Payton will wear his father's familiar #34 jersey when the Slaughter begins Indoor Football League play on February 27th for coach Steve McMichael, a former teammate of Payton's father Walter with the Chicago Bears.

The Slaughter recently joined the now 26 team IFL after leaving the Continental Indoor Football League after last season.

Payton last played for the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL after stints with the Tennessee Titans of the NFL, the Amsterdam Admirals of NFL Europe and the Montreal Alouettes of the CFL.

Jacory Harris to have thumb surgery

Hurricanes sophomore quarterback Jacory Harris will have a routine surgical procedure performed on his right thumb today. Supposedly the surgery is very minor, and Harris is expected to miss a portion of spring practice.

Harris completed 242-of-406 passes for 3,352 yards and 24 touchdowns in 13 games for the Hurricanes this season. He became the seventh Miami quarterback to throw for 3,000 yards in a single season. He completed 59.6 percent of his passes and had a 140.1 passing efficiency.

The strobe was cranked up to its highest power setting, overriding the available light in the building to such an extent the background appears totally dark.

While I prefer to stay as low to the ground as possible while shooting sports, sometimes other perspectives make for interesting images. When the Hurricanes played in Miami Arena, the catwalks above the floor perfectly aligned with the baskets, so mounting a remote camera above the rim was possible.
When the BankUnited Center opened in 2003, the catwalks were configured differently than the old arena, thus eliminating the direct overhead view. Last season I mounted a camera over the Hurricanes bench and captured a strategy session during a timeout.

The BankUnited center installed huge black curtains which can be lowered to hide a majority of the seats and to create a more intimate feel to lesser attended events and basketball practices. Using one as a background, I shot with four Speedotron lights in the rafters and one White-Lightning brand light on the floor level for fill. Jack did the rest.

For this shot of the 2009 Hurricanes Men's Basketball team, I used my arena game set up (five speedotrons, one in each corner and a fifth above this camera position for fill) and placed the camera body on the floor, with a slight upward angle. The majority of the light hits the floor and falls off before reaching the background, with some leftover light spill hitting the banners above. I then added my "grunged" Photoshop treatment for the finished image.

This shot is of Hurricanes forward Dwayne Collins blocking a shot by North Carolina's Deon Thompson during a game at the BankUnited Center back in 2008.

I blogged about this shot on my other blog last March. I essentially set up a wide lens in front of my floor position and triggered it with a wired remote. The shot shows peak action, a full arena, and even a hint of how I light my basketball images.

Sean Taylor, famous for his ferocious hits, wipes out Pitt TE Darryl Weston during the Hurricanes 28-14 victory over the Panthers in 2003.

You might remember seeing this photo from the opposite view. Rick Stewart of Getty Images captured this hit at nearly the same moment from the other end zone. (That's me in the green jacket right underneath Weston).

In 2003, Taylor was named a consensus first-team All-American, the Big East Conference Defensive Player of the Year and a finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award. He led the Big East Conference and ranked first nationally in interceptions with 10, tying the record for interceptions in a season with Bennie Blades. He finished first in total tackles with 77 (57 solos). He intercepted two passes during the Pitt game shown above. His three touchdown returns of interceptions is a Miami single-season record.

The first photo you see when visiting the site is of Sebastian the Ibis running through the smoke at the Orange Bowl Stadium in 2002. Most photographers stand somewhere around midfield and shoot the players and coaches running towards them with a long telephoto lens. For a change of pace I stood in front of the cheerleaders and used a wide angle lens from ground level. You only have a couple of seconds from this location to get a shot before the "smoke" overtakes you.

Miami 87, FAU 69

James Dews scored 15 points and added nine rebounds and the Hurricanes defeated the Florida Atlantic Owls 87-69 at the Orange Bowl Classic at the Bank Atlantic Center in Sunrise yesterday.

Dwayne Collins posted his second-straight double-double with 17 points and a game-high 14 rebounds and Durand Scott added 13 points and four assists for UM.

The Hurricanes improved to 11-1, with their lone loss a one-point defeat at Boston College on Dec. 6. They won for the 19th time in 20 games against the Owls.

FAU coach Mike Jarvis, when asked after the game about the Owls' dismal all-time record against the 'Canes, said, "We will play Miami until we beat them."

Albert Bentley Most Valuable Walk-On Award - Chris Ivory

Sophomore Chris Ivory, a walk-on who handled long snapping duties for punts in 11 games last season and every game this season, repeated as the winner of the Albert Bentley Most Valuable Walk-On Award. Chris won this award last season as a redshirt freshman.

Before coming to Miami, Chris was ranked as the No. 15 long snapper in the nation and No. 1 in Florida by the Chris Sailer kicking and snapping national event in Las Vegas.

Special Teams Player of Year - Matt Bosher

Junior K/P Matt Bosher earned UM's Special Teams Player of Year honors at the Hurricanes Football awards ceremony earlier this month.

Bosher has earned the ACC's Specialist of the Week honor twice this season, and currently has made 12 consecutive field goals, which ranks second both for a single season and a career, and 88 consecutive PATs, which ranks third all-time in school history.

Brandon Harris

Sophomore cornerback Brandon Harris has been selected an All-American by SI.com, the Associated Press and Phil Steele Magazine.

Harris, an All-ACC First Team selection this season, earned second team All-America honors from SI.com, third team honors from the AP and fourth team All-America honors from Phil Steele Magazine.

Harris is Miami's first player since safety Kenny Phillips in 2007 to earn All-America honors, who was an AP third team All-American.

Andre Johnson

Andre Johnson gained 193 yards on 11 receptions and scored two touchdowns as the Texans defeated the Seattle Seahawks 34-7 last Sunday. Johnson has 81 catches for a league leading 1237 yards and eight touchdowns on the season.

Strength Training Athlete of the Year - Allen Bailey

Allen Bailey is by far one of Miami's most physical specimens, as he runs a 4.65 in the 40-yard dash, has a 39-inch vertical (tied for 3rd on the team), benches over 400 pounds, squats in the mid 500's and power cleans in the upper 300's. Longtime UM strength coach Andreu Swasey gives Bailey perhaps the ultimate praise: "He is the freakiest of all the freaks since I've been here."

It is no surprise that Bailey took home UM's Strength Training Athlete of the Year award for 2009.
